A Time of Transition

Middle School is a critical period in a child’s academic and social-emotional growth. These years lay the foundation for high school and beyond as students begin exploring and preparing for college.

It is a time that can present many physical, emotional, and social changes. Children may navigate issues with self-esteem and confidence as they seek independence.

Sixth Grade

The Journey Begins
  • Analyze literature, author styles, and word choice.
  • Develop narratives and argumentative writing.
  • Master algebra, statistics, ratios, and equations.
  • Study energy forms and life on Earth.
  • Explore geography and history of the Eastern Hemisphere.

Seventh Grade

Deepening Knowledge
  • Write across genres, including multi-perspective essays.
  • Solve complex math with rates and proportions.
  • Expand geometry: surface area, perimeter, and volume.
  • Study Earth’s surface changes over time.
  • U.S. History from Pre-Colonial times to the Civil War.
  • Explore visual arts, music, dance, and theater.

Eighth Grade

Ready for High School
  • Interpret high-school level texts and demands.
  • Master techniques like analogy, allusion, and irony.
  • Apply the Pythagorean Theorem and algebraic graphs.
  • Identify human impact on the environment.
  • Study the laws of motion and the Solar System.
  • U.S. History from Reconstruction to the Modern Era.
